Glenville, NC homes for sale didn’t always have that enviable view of Lake Glenville. Once upon a time, the Glenville as we know it today was a parcel of land used for farming. Here, life was lived in utmost simplicity. There were cabbage fields and a tannery, Lake Glenville didn’t even exist.
Once a town located in the township of Hamburg in
Jackson County, Glenville was a thriving community. Originally called Hamburgh, and then Hamburg (from which the township got its name), the name of the town was changed to Glenville when it was incorporated in 1891. With its own post office and zip code of 28736 established in 1856, people soon discovered
Glenville NC Real Estate and started relocating. By the time the town was incorporated in 1891, there were 93 more residents living in Glenville than there were in the township of Sylva.
The town, which was used as a fort to prevent attacks from the Cherokee Indians, is very different from what we find in present day Glenville. Back then there was a school, two churches, a cemetery, and an Inn. Most all of the structures were taken down to give way to the construction of
Nantahala Power and Light’s hydroelectric dam in 1941. With this, Lake Glenville emerged and the former town of Glenville was submerged beneath its waters.
Today, Glenville hardly has any remnants of its past. Where once a farming community stood, a gorgeous body of water runs deep while luxury homes now line the shoreline of Glenville. And although progress has brought about change, one thing that remains is the charm and simplicity of Glenville.
